Reducing Food Waste: A Key to a Sustainable Future

Food waste is not just an environmental issue; it’s an ethical, economic, and societal challenge that demands immediate attention. At the Green Gather Food Event in Westmeath, ZWAI highlighted the staggering statistics and practical solutions to tackle this crisis during a talk by one our Vice Chairperson, Jack O’Sullivan.

The Problem

  • Scale of Waste: Globally, 1.3 billion tonnes of food are wasted annually, with Europe and North America accounting for up to 300 kilograms per person.
  • Environmental Impact: Food waste contributes to 8–10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, exacerbating climate change.
  • Resource Drain: Wasted food depletes land, water, and biodiversity—resources critical to a sustainable food system.
  • Ethical Dilemma: While millions go hungry, perfectly edible food is discarded at every stage of the supply chain.

ZWAI’s Call to Action

ZWAI advocates for bold steps to reduce food waste by at least 50% across the EU, aligning with climate goals like reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030. Key proposals include:

  1. Farm-Level Solutions: Mandating reporting on unharvested crops and incentivising eco-friendly farming practices.
  2. Supply Chain Efficiency: Introducing mandatory food waste audits and penalties for excessive waste in businesses and retailers.
  3. Consumer Awareness: Promoting mindful shopping, clarifying date labeling, and encouraging plant-based diets to reduce environmental footprints.
  4. Policy Advocacy: Redirecting agricultural subsidies from meat and dairy production to support plant-based and sustainable food systems.

Why Act Now?

As COP29 discussions unfold in Baku, the global spotlight is on sustainable solutions to mitigate climate change. Reducing food waste is one of the most impactful ways to lower emissions, preserve resources, and ensure equitable food distribution.

Every action counts. From choosing local farmers’ markets to advocating for systemic change, we all have a role in combating food waste. Let’s rethink our relationship with food—for the planet, for the people, and for a sustainable future.
